The European Commission's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, at the same time deputy chairman of the European Commission, has today been a host of an informal rally with the prime ministers of Western Balkan countries, to discuss the situation in the region, and in particular for opportunities to advance the region's EU integration in 2018.
Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj; Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama; Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Chairman Denis Zvizdzic; Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev; Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovik; and Serbia's chief minister, Ana Brnabiq, have reaffirmed their determination to continue affairs for the EU integration process, suggests a communique issued by Moghrin's office.
“Sic has been clearly confirmed this year, including by the European Council in March, and by Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker at his annual address to the EU situation in September, 2018 will offer a unique opportunity for the region to take irreversible steps towards its EU integration, if it is given the maximum priority needed reforms, in particular in the area of rule of law, justice and fundamental rights”, the EU communique says.
“With a renewed dynamic in the EU enlargement policy and a chance to make significant progress throughout the region, the High Representative has stressed the need for all partners from the Western Balkans to speed up reforms needed to meet their citizens' expectations, and to take concrete steps towards integration into the EU”, the communique stresses.
According to the EU, participants have stressed their commitment and their interest in strengthening co-operation and good neighbourly relations, and showing understanding to each other.
“In this context, the importance of continued discussions between presidents Hashim Thaci and Aleksandar Vuciq were stressed to advance the EU-mediated dialogue for normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia”, the EU communiqué concludes.
