For centuries garlic has been used as a natural medicine.
Athletes at the first Olympics in ancient Greece consumed it to boost their strength and stability.
During World War I and II, soldiers were given garlic to prevent gangrene.
And scientists have recently discovered that garlic components serve as a natural antibiotic to prevent and combat various diseases.
In a new study, professors in Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences noted the addition of the fluor chemical element in the garlic's natural compounds would increase beneficial biological activity.
Fluor is one of the most reactive elements on the periodic table and is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry.
For example, some of the 10 best - selling types of drugs contain fluorium atoms, including Lipitor cholesterol reduction agents and Pfizer Prewacid, a drug used to treat and prevent stomach and intestine ulcers.
Scientists thus found that garlic and fluori can be a powerful combination.
To test their hypothesis, scientists changed a number of garlic components, replacing hydrogen atoms with fluid atoms.
After completion, they used 10-day embryo eggs to compare the effectiveness of compounds modified to fluoride and unmodified components as anti-angiogenics and anti-trombic agents.
Angiogenesis agents are used to combat cancer by blocking tumor growth, while antitrombosis agents help reduce blood clotting.
The results showed that modified compounds were higher in biological activity and should be taken into account in the development of future drug therapies.
