Spetsnaz (The Military Special Purpose Unit ) is an umbrella term for Russian special forces and is used in numerous post-Soviet states.

Historically, the term refers to special military units controlled by military intelligence service G RU (Spetsnaz GRU).

It also describes specific units for purposes, or other ministries' work duties (such as the Ministry of Internal Affairs ODON and the rescue unit of the Emergency Ministry) [1] in post-Soviet countries.
