Waterford Crystal Ball is ready for New Year's Eve celebrations in New York Times Square. But those who want to take part in the 110-year tradition and in the open concert will have to face low temperatures. Twenty central and northeastern states of the United States have already been hit by cold weather and snow.

Emergency services and shelters are sending vehicles to gather homeless people and others who can be blocked in the cold.

Some people are courageous and have gone out to enjoy ice.
There's no bad weather... just bad clothes... so we're dressed good”, says one resident.
For many others, such weather means changing their plans.

The temperatures on New Year's Eve are expected to be close to 10 degrees below zero from northeastern and central states to southern Carolina. These include large cities such as Chicago, St Louis, New York, Washington, and Atlanta. The cold is expected to continue in the first week of 2018. Southern coastal countries may experience a number of storms as cold air strikes with warm, damp air from the Gulf of Mexico. / VoA
