Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in San Diego, as the flames spread from 10 hectares to 4,100 hectares in just a few hours on Thursday.
Three firefighters are injured and about 500 buildings are destroyed.
A death was reported in Ventura County, but it was not confirmed whether it was associated with fires.
The White House said it is in contact with California authorities and ready to provide whatever assistance is needed.
This is the fifth day of California fires, caused by extreme weather - strong winds and dry terrain.
