Chinese President Xi Jinping asked the heads of technology companies gathered today at an Internet conference to respect the sovereignty of cyberspace, a phrase the Chinese government uses to legitimise network censorship.
China's “Dera for the world will never be closed, but it will only open more”, he said.
Executive leaders of American technology giants, including the heads of “Google”, Sudar Picchai and “Apple”, Tim Cook are present at this three-day World Internet Conference, in the arms of Chinese internet entrepreneurs like Jack Ma (Alibaba), Pony Ma (Tencent) and Robin Li (Buidu).
This annual conference is organised by the Chinese government, which applies one of the highest internet and media controls.
China has more than 731 million internet users, according to official data.
However, access to foreign sites is strictly controlled.
“Facebook”, “Google”, “Type”, “YouTube” and news pages including “The New York Times” and “The Wall Street Journal” are blocked and can only be accessed via private virtual networks or, as the VPN is otherwise known./
