The mosque strikers on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt carried the Islamic State flag, the Ahram news agency reports, quoting the Public Prosecutor's Office. Their statement reportedly included 25-30 militants who triggered the massacre.
Meanwhile, the death toll has exceeded 300.
The al-Rauda mosque in the city of Son al-Abed, where Muslim believers were observing Friday's prayer, were bombed and those who tried to escape were killed by dozens of armed aggressors surrounding the object of auto worship.
Today's prosecutor's statement says terrorists were in 5 vehicles and started shooting at glass windows. They also set fire to 7 cars parked outside the mosque.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Army has declared it has carried out air strikes on terrorist locations in response to this attack.
Egyptian security forces have fought with Islamist rebels on the Sinai Peninsula for years. Militans linked to the so-called Islamic State have been authors of a series of deadly attacks in the region. The militants have usually targeted the Christian security forces or churches, and such an attack on a mosque of Sufi Muslims has shaken Egypt. This is also the bloodiest aggression for the country in recent years.
