Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is afraid, because he knows what happens to him if he loses power”, German journalist Deniz Yüce said in his first prison interview in Turkey.
The case is a source of diplomatic tension between Berlin and Ankara. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in February that Yücel's detention was “harsh and disappointing”.
The 44-year-old correspondent holds a Turkish and German passport and is named <x0 terrorist agent” and “German” from Erdunoğan. Yücel gave the interview through to his lawyers because he's being held in solitary confinement.
The journalist has filed a complaint with the European Court for Human Rights against a decision by Turkish judges to keep him in custody. After some delays, the court has set a deadline until 28 November for Turkey to give answers.
Erdogan has often been criticised for installing a totalitarian regime in Turkey by imprisoned Western activists and opposition officials.
