Putin told Trump that President Bashar Assad confirmed his commitment to political reforms in Syria, including constitutional changes. Assad also backed the idea of holding presidential and parliamentary elections as part of a temporary political process during his meeting with Putin in Soci.
The Russian president announced his American counterpart for the upcoming meeting between the leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey, aimed at finding ways to further normalise the situation in Syria, while contributing to the political process in the Middle East, reports “RT” Transmission Periscope.
The trilateral talks are scheduled for Wednesday, November 22nd.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with the phone call, which was practical and informative,” said in a statement by the Kremlin.
The White House said Washington reaffirmed its support for the US and Russian Joint Declaration issued at the APECA summit on 11 November.
The Russian president said a solution to the Syrian political crisis should be based on the principles of maintaining sovereignty, territorial integrity and Syria's independence.
Putin added that Russia has offered to organise the Syrian Congress for National Dialogue in Soci.
Putin again spoke of normalising bilateral relations, especially when it comes to fighting terrorism.
He added that co-operation between Russian services and US security may be of great practical importance. Trump backed Putin's ideas, the Kremlin said.
Putin and Trump agreed that the crisis around the Korean Peninsula should be resolved through diplomatic means, according to the Kremlin.
During the Iranian nuclear programme discussion, the Russian president reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to full implementation of Iran's 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Joint Action Plan (JPCOA).
He also called the accord a key factor of regional stability “, which also contributes to the global regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Putin and Trump also touched on the terrorist threat and drug production in Afghanistan.
Speaking of the situation in eastern Ukraine, Putin once again underlined that there are no alternative alternatives other than the full implementation of Minsk Accords by all sides in the Ukrainian conflict.
Trump and Putin spoke last in the margins of the APECU summit in mid-November.
Although there was no official meeting between the two leaders during the rally, they still managed to make a joint statement about Syria, in which they said the Syrian conflict “does not have a military solution”.
Putin also held separate telephone talks with Saudi Arabia's King Salman, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.
