The border contract, which has remained open between Slovenia and Croatia, both part of the EU, has served as an example for other countries before they are integrated into the EU, to resolve the demarcation issue, European Parliament representative Tanja Fajon has said in an interview.
She has cited that there are a series of open or unresolved issues among countries that are part of the EU, such as Croatia with Bosnia, Slovenia, etc. So Kosovo prior to visa liberalisation has to carry out the issue of demarcation.
My experience is that we're not like good neighbors as promised. Because, if we look at our experience with the problem between Slovenia and Croatia, there is an open border, as well as a host of other open issues... always happens that some nationalist interests are the first ones. I want Croatia to be, of course, the one that with its experience and enlargement towards the EU will give a hand, not to open up new problems, but to do everything possible to help and not block Bosnia as soon as possible to integrate into the EU”, Fajon has said in an interview for Anadolu Agency in Turkish language, broadcast Indesksonline.
He adds that in the region, all have many open issues about borders and that this will be a serious obstacle when a country in the region will be required to join the EU, taking the case of demarcation of the Kosovo and Montenegro border, which has become a criterion for visa liberalisation for Kosovo citizens.
Because experience from Slovenia and Croatia's history is such that no new country will enter the EU without resolving open issues before joining the EU. We should have sincere efforts to resolve these bilateral issues in parallel with the enlargement process” said Fajon, broadcast the Indexline.
One of the open issues in the region, which the European Parliament representative has spoken, is the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Fajon spoke of how to calm tensions between the two countries and solve problems both Kosovo and Serbia before joining the EU.
This will happen to a reasonable policy, which is honest, that wants to provide all people with a decent life, on the one hand and on the other. It is also in the interest of Belgrade and Pristina that since this dialogue meets the conditions, which all people can live in normal. And I hope that this dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is best in a positive atmosphere. All other dangerous statements -- that is, when politicians agree on something in Brussels and then go home and work there something else -- are not useful. So I hope that this dialogue goes further and improves people's lives”, Fajon said.
