John Swinton, former editor-in-chief of the world's largest and prestigious newspaper, “The New York Times”, when he made a toast to the cheap press, he said:
There is no such thing, in this time of world history as well as in America, something like independent media. You know and I know. Even if one of you dared to write his honest opinion, like a real journalist, you'll just be sure that that scripture will never be published. I am paid each week to keep my honest thoughts away from my work and the articles I write.
Others of you are paid in like manner for the same things, and if one of you is foolish enough to write his own thoughts, for he would soon go out on the street and seek another job. If I were to allow my thoughts to appear in one of my jobs, I would be unemployed within 24 hours.
The journalists' business is prone to the destruction of the truth, to always be persuaded to tell lies first, manipulate, slander, kneel before money, and sell our nation and our people for our daily meal. You know, I know, but what kind of nonsense would it be to believe in free press? We're the tools and vasals of the rich backstage. We're the puppets, they pull the strings, we dance. Our talent, our opportunities and our lives are the property of other people.
