Warnings of hurricanes and storm swells are in effect from Louisiana on the border between Alabama and Florida. This area includes New Orleans in Louisiana, which was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Residents from some areas in Louisiana are ordered to evacuate.
The state of emergency has been declared in 29 Florida counties, six South Mississippi and New Orleans counties.
President Donald Trump has issued an emergency statement allowing federal assistance to be made available to help alleviate the storm's effects.
Before returning from Tropical Storm to hurricane, Nate killed 25 people as he passed through Central America earlier this week.
