As future wars are more and more carried out by intelligent robots that will effectively replace human soldiers, Norwegian researcher Morten Hansbø fears his country may be caught unawares by recent trends in the fight without leadership.

Just a few years later, war robots fully able to understand the surrounding circumstances, adapting to weather conditions and being GPS-oriented can become reality, writes researcher Morten Hansbø of the Norwegian Defence Research Institute (FFI) in his article “Robotica, War Power and Persistence in Protection of the Future “.

Countries that do not use robots can become easy prey in the next war, Hansbø said in an interview for the Norwegian daily Aftenposten.

A defence that does not rely on robotics will have little credibility after 15 years”, said Morten Hansbø.

Hansbø referred to an ongoing investigation of the armed forces, which showed that self-directing tanks will soon be superior to traditional tanks. The same applies to the new generations of aircraft, as air fighting will be dominated by self-directed weapons systems. In a matter of years, robots will be able to adapt to unexpected situations in the same way that people actually do.

Hansbø argued that Norway's position waits and looks would soon fail.

The next “Decade can become like the Kodak time for the Armed Forces, quite irrevocably Morten Hansbão, referring to the photo giant who lost the chance of the time when digital photography replaced traditional film and fell irreversibly back.

According to Hansbø, using pilotless systems by Norway's opponents would put the Nordic country's military capacity under further pressure, questioning its importance as well.

In August, 116 technology experts, including Elon Musk from the Tesla electric car company, called on the UN for a complete ban on the use of artificial intelligence in weapons technology, warning of a possible “revolution in war”. The FFFI researcher argued a UN ban could result in inefficient, as technology will spread like fire from the moment of development.

It will be difficult to determine what is legal and what is not, and technology is always ahead of the law. Some will respect a ban, others will not do as is today the situation for other weapons systems”, argues Hansbø.

Hansbø continued to describe clever tactics that could be used to overcome a superior power by sending in great numbers free fears to wear out advanced weapons systems, referring to an incident described by US General David Perkins at a Alabama military seminar, when the US had apparently used an expensive patriotic missile to bring down a common threat.
When there are hundreds of fears against you, they quickly empty the bunker,” Hansbø said, arguing that Norway needed new resources and solutions to detection and countermass. “Robot War for Robots is probably not like fighting on the corner of the ring. He said, ”
According to Hansbø, the Norwegian Armed Forces must act quickly to walk on time, as is done with F-35, which, though not fully robotics, contains many automated functions. Previously, Norway joined the F-35 programme and committed to buying 52 aircraft. Hansbø argued that Norway must be “objectively engaged” to develop and ultimately become world leaders in the weapons of self-road to protect its soldiers.

Colonel Gjert Lage Dindal, former dean of the Norwegian Royal Air Force Academy, coauthor of the book “When the Drons wake up” and the expert of NATO in Brussels supported Hansbão's call for “thrown into the robotics convoy”, but does not agree that this is done immediately, as Norway currently faces many challenges on earth, as is the continued modernisation of the Armed Forces.
