European Union Election Observation Mission chief Alinez Peterle at a media conference said EU observers have found shortcomings during the election process, where they have seen that a large number of people dead continue to figure on election lists.
He demanded that death certificates be issued automatically from now on.
There are problems and challenges which do not require national unity or change of legislation. There are some things that require change, mentioned in the election list. It is very important that death certificates be automatically made and not issued on the request of family members. I want to say that what needs to be done is not to please Brussels, but improves the quality of democracy in Kosovo and everything goes well for the citizens of Kosovo”, he said.
Despite criticism resulting from the findings, according to him, these elections have been organised better than the 2013 local elections. Out of the 446 seats in 38 municipalities they have monitored, Peterle said EU observers have praised him as a quiet day and without major incidents on the day of election.
EU observers deemed election day positive, without major incidents. While the CEC has managed to do voter education and training for those working. There were threats in Serbian locations, and that is an obstacle because they failed to meet the standards for democratic elections”, he said.
Peterle added that the media have covered the events of October 22nd, but stressed there have been many sponsored programmes, and some have even violated the election silence.
“Transmission media have covered election day and the news contained information, but there have been many sponsored programmes. Klan Kosova and Dukaagjini have violated the electoral silence, and the KKP has not condemned those who committed violations. ZAP has filed 552 complaints and submitted the day before the elections”, he stressed.
He said that in northern Kosovo, standards have not been met in the rest of the country and that concrete measures should be taken in this direction.
