An alarm has been issued for a week that the internet in Kosovo is not safe. However, it seems that few have taken seriously the credit card, the mail passwords may come into the hands of hackers.
In addition to connoisseurs, showing that all online services are at risk, banking institutions where millions of euros of citizens are circulated via online payments behave as if nothing had happened. Other institutions that process information related to privacy remain silent.
Thus Kosovars, like the biggest Internet users in Europe, are seriously at risk of losing money and personal data in the virtual world, writes Word newspaper.
In recent days a major cyberattack has been presented in various countries of the world, involving the embezzlement of personal data through communication into wireless computer networks (WiFi).
Operator IPKO through the announcement on his Facebook page has been alarmed by the danger in Kosovo, but has not mentioned concrete cases.
According to Blerim Raja, leader of the cyber engineering department at Pristina University, this attack now known as “KARCK” (Key Reinstallation Attacks) exploits the weakness (the flaw) of standard implementation of the security protocol W PA2.
In technical explanation, this protocol, WPA2, standardized according to IEEE 802.11, is tasked with protecting communication in wireless computer networks (WiFi), and today we find it in all computer devices (routers, mobile devices, and PC).
Rexha suggests that because of this attack all online services are endangered by the privacy violation “and separately those where the user should give private notes such as credit card number, password (password), various messages sent through apps (emails, chats, etc.). )”
Under this attack, online services, even in Kosovo, remain secure as they were before. Upgrading improved protocol equipment, maybe an IPA3, is the best protection, and by then we have to avoid the WiFi” net, Rexja says.
According to him, there is now danger that even e-banking data or other financial applications will fall into the hands of “hackers”.
Yes, the risk is now higher for financial data to be misused, but it must be considered that the attacker and the victim must be on the same network! ”, he explains.
In the meantime, all citizens can do to protect themselves seems to remain to avoid these services and to care for their use.
Kosovo authorities have now informed me of the Kosovo citizens of this attack and its consequences, while in the absence of mechanisms they cannot undertake anything to provide security to citizens.
The ARKEPs are announced with this case and within the competencies have taken the necessary measures.
“We have sensitive the opinion that is within our reach and will follow developments expected in this regard at a global level”, Kressnik Gashi, chairman of the Board at ARKEP, said.
According to him, no case in Kosovo has yet been presented.
Meanwhile, no answers have been given at the Kosovo Central Bank whether any cases involving possible cyberattacks have already been presented in the citizens' accounts.
