Hundreds of fires have engulfed northern and central Portugal since Sunday, following the worst summer in the past 90 years, killing at least 41 people and shaking rescue teams and firefighters. In June, 64 people were killed in a large mountain fire.
The Interior Ministry is in charge of firefighters, police and the civil protection agency. All these departments have come under fire criticism.
In the resignation letter, the minister said: “I no longer have political and personal conditions to continue holding this post”.
Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has said in a communique that he accepts the minister's resignation.
