The leader of the Social Democrat Party in Romania, Liviu Dragnea, who is on trial charged with corruption, was given handcuffs by protesters in Bucharest.
Liviu Dragnea faced an unusual protest Tuesday afternoon when a group of activists waved handcuffs as he arrived at the Supreme Court for a trial, allegedly inciting abuse of office and counterfeiting.
His former wife, Bombonica Prodana, and several employees of the Children's Protection Authority in Teleorman, where Dragnea has served as head of the district council for years, are also expected to be charged on the same issue.
Protesters shouted: “in prison! ”
According to anti-corruption prosecutors, in 2006-2012, Dragnea, as head of the Teleorman District Council and head of the Social Democratic Party's Social Branch, allegedly pressured the Children's Regional Defence Authority to employ and pay two employees belonging to the party.
