Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis has said the planned referendum on October 1st is unconstitutional and that referenda have become <x0-instruments for dictators”.
The Catalonia region government is pushing ahead of the referendum, even though authorities in Madrid have shut down the electronic voting system, and the Guardia police have confiscated a large number of balloting.
Despite the obstacles, National Assembly of Catalonia President Jordi Sanchez has said that if 1 million votes for independence are achieved would be “an extraordinary success”.
About 5.3 million people are eligible to vote, while those opposed to independence have indicated they will not participate in the referendum.
