The municipalities call for urgent help after the storm: Over 1m euros damage in Suhareka, seven schools damaged in Malisheva

Following the powerful storm that hit several Kosovo municipalities, local leaders have raised the alarm for major damage caused in infrastructure, schools and agriculture, demanding urgent intervention by the Government for their compensation.

Suhareka municipality Chairman Bali Muharremaj said the situation has already stabilised, but the material damages are significant. According to him, the municipality has formed three commissions to assess damage in education, agriculture and public health.

Muarremaj announced that the biggest damage has been recorded in schools, where only in the education sector is estimated at around 300 thousand euros, while total damages in the municipality are expected to exceed 1m euros.

In just about 40 days, the new school year begins and damaged peaks must be repaired. We have no emergency funds and we will address the Ministry of Education and Government for support”, he said.

He added that the municipality has no budget for compensation for damages and that farmers are facing major losses, while many do not believe the damages will be compensated.

Even the chairman of the Malisheva municipality, Ekrem Kastrati, said the municipality continues to suffer the consequences of continued rainfall, remembering that major damage had also suffered from the January month's floods.

According to him, previous damage report of value from around 662m eurosHe was approved in the Municipal Assembly and sent to the Government, but there has been no response so far.

Kastrati announced that recent rainfall has damaged seven schools, affecting facades, roofs, and stamps, while damage has been caused to bridges, sewers, sewage, and farmers' greenhouses.

Meanwhile, Kosovo Communist Association Executive Director Saban Ibrahimi said that according to information received from municipalities, the most affected by the storm are Vitita, Mamusa, Istog, Rahoveci and Suhareka.
