(an hour ago)Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said yesterday was a dark “day”, but that prior to that there had been a colorful and bright “day, which showed how open and varied this town is”.
He says Berlin was showing itself “as a city of freedom” and that “being full of colors is actually something beautiful”.
Wegner went on to say that the “attack is an alleged Islamist attack on our way of co-existence, on our liberal democracy, on our opening and on our freedom”, reports the BBC.
He announced that a memorial ceremony will be held and that citizens will walk together towards the Brandenburg Gate.
He added that flags in the city municipality have been lowered to half-point.
German police are searching for a 21-year-old, believed to have links to Islamist circles, after a car crashed into a crowd near celebrations for the Berlin Homosexual Parade, killing one person and wounding 16 others.
