EP votes report for Kosovo tomorrow, supports EU integration, voices concern for political situation

The European Parliament is expected to vote on the Kosovo Foreign Policy Commission in Brussels on Wednesday, which envisions strong support for the country's goals of integration into the European Union and reiterates the requirement for all member states to recognise Kosovo's independence.

In the draft report, at the same time it expresses regret for the political situation in the country, for the institutional stalemate and polarisations that have accompanied the election processes, warning that this situation could bring serious financial consequences to Kosovo.

According to the document, there is a danger that the country will lose considerable resources from the Development Plan if it fails to meet the criteria within the set deadlines.

The report, drafted by Estonian Eurodeputet Riho Terras, estimates that the 2025 elections have been conducted regularly and welcomes the formation of the government, but emphasises the lack of compromise to elect the president.

Also, it becomes known that the main parliamentary groups have agreed with compromise amendments, which once again confirm support for Kosovo's citizenship and its EU integration.

In the text of the report, inter alia, Kosovo's application for EU membership is supported and member states are urged to engage the European Commission in preparing the questionnaire without delay and to give the opinion based on merit for Kosovo's application. Also, the EU Council is invited to act quickly, including granting candidate status once the criteria are met.

Likewise, the five non-recognising EU states are invited to recognise Kosovo's independence so that the country can advance equally with other candidate states.

The report also recalls the opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 22, 2010, under which Kosovo's declaration of independence has not violated international law.
