Decision for Thaci and others: Specialised Chambers Remain on July 20th

Specialised Chambers in The Hague still remain within the 20 July deadline for declaring the verdict on former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders.

In a written reply, the Court has recalled that on May 5, 2026, the Judicial Chamber issued an order under which the deadline for declaring the court was postponed until July 20th.

On that order, the Judicial Chamber also stated that if a further extension was absolutely necessary, it would issue an order on the case at the right time”, the Court's clarification said.

According to Procedure and Tests Rule 159%1, if the random circumstances require more time than the original 90-day deadline, the extra period should not be spent 60 days, unless there is a need for further postponement.

The court has stressed that “if the Judicial Chamber in this case stipulates that additional time is needed, such a decision will be reportedly made to the parties and will become public”, Euronealbania reports.

The tribunal in The Hague has been indicted in Kosovo for the unconventional treatment of four prisoners, but spokeswoman Angela Grip has cited humanitarian visits allowed to detain.

“Cornosis Legal of Specialised Chambers enables the detainees to apply for visits to Kosovo for convincing humanitarian reasons. Judges adopted this rule based on international human rights rights rights rights, including Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the United Nations Standard Base Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. So far, judges of the Special Chambers have ordered 14 visits of the detainees to Kosovo, who have been organised and implemented by the tribunal, such as to enable a detainee to visit a sick relative or honor the memory and to be close to family members after the death of a relative. In Mr. Thaci's case, four such visits --” -- said Angela Grip, spokeswoman for Specialised Chambers.

Former KLA leaders Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselini, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi have been held in The Hague since November 2020, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. /Exaonline
