(2 hours ago)The commander of the Army Forces in Europe and Africa who was famous as the last US soldier to leave Afghanistan in 2021 is leaving his post after only 18 months in office, the Army confirmed on Tuesday.
Christopher Donahue, US Army Commander General for Europe and Africa and Commander of NATO Allied Land Command, will resign from his command on 2 July, according to a statement handed down by the Army Associated PressPeriscope broadcast.
Donahue is one of more than ten senior officials who have retired or left office prematurely under the direction of US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. The latter has promoted the policy of reducing the number of generals in the army by the motto “fewer generals, more soldiers”.
Donahe deputy, Major General Christopher Norris, will carry out his duties meanwhile, the statement added.
The West Point graduate and special operations career commander Donahue commanded Delta Force units in Iraq and Afghanistan before leading the 82nd Air Division from July 2020 to March 2022.
On August 30, 2021, Donahae became the last American soldier to leave the country after nearly 20 years of war caused by the attacks on September 11, 2001.
