Ukraine, Hungary launch minority rights talks to advance EU membership

Ukraine and Hungary have started expert meetings to discuss Hungarian minority rights in Ukraine's Transcarpati region. These talks mark a first step to improve relations between the two countries, following years of tension that prevented Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister, representatives of the Hungarian minority, the Ministry of Education and other local and academic institutions participated. Discussions focus on three key issues: bilateral relations, minority rights and Ukraine's EU membership process.
The issue has been problematic since the adoption of the 2017 law, which requires Ukrainian instruction for most education on the fifth grade, perceived by Hungary as discrimination against the Hungarian minority. Recent amendments to the minority law, adopted in 2023, allow the use of minority and EU languages in private schools, universities, media and political advertising, while learning Ukrainian remains mandatory, writes EuroNews, broadcasts Periscope.
This process is considered key to removing political barriers and Ukraine's progress towards EU membership./Periscope/
