These twins were born within minutes of each other--but they have different fathers

They were conceived naturally, grew up together in the same womb and were born from the same mother within minutes of each other -- but they are half-sisters.

Michelle and Lavinia, 49, exist because of a very rare biological process called heteropateral superfecondience. For that to happen, a woman must produce more than an egg during the same cycle, eggs must successfully be fertilized by sperm from different men, and resulting embryos must survive pregnancy.

Only about 20 cases have ever been identified worldwide. After months of researching their history on the BBC Radio 4, The Gift, I found that Lavinia and Michelle are the only twin couple with different fathers ever recorded in the United Kingdom.

To Lavinian, this discovery was devastating. She and Michelle had had had a difficult childhood, where they went from house to house and custody. The only stability the non-identic twins had was each other.

After weeks of investigation, Michelle discovered that her father was Alex, the brother of a woman who had been friends with their mother. Michelle contacted some of Alex's family, who warned him that he had fought alcoholism and addiction for years and lived on the street.

Michelle and Lavinia met with a woman named Olivene, whom Michelle believed to be her first new cousin and twin. Michelle felt an immediate connection.

I knew it was blood», she says. But Lavinia did not feel the same way. And when Olivene took pictures of her family, Lavinia didn't see herself on their faces.

Lavinia decided to take another DNA test. She did not expect to receive a different outcome from Michelle's, but she had to do something about her growing feelings of concern that Alex's family was not hers.

When she opened the results and saw the amazing truth that her twin sister was her half sister, Lavinia became upset - and became furious.
