Northern Macedonia Customs captures Albanian with half a million euros

A co-ordinated action by the North Macedonia Customs Directorate has led to the discovery and selection of the largest foreign currency in the institution's history, totaling 500 thousand euros hidden in a specially built bunker within a minibus. The case was found at the Tabanoc border checkpoint, where customs authorities prevented an attempt to illegally transfer money outside legal procedures.
Customs Directorate Director Boban Nikolovski, at a press conference, indicated that the operation was carried out by the Control and Investigation Sector through the Department for Operational Work, with the support of the mobile team, K9 unit and Mobile Scans Service.
According to him, the minibus, owned by a tourist agency from Albania, was entering the country via the Tabanoc border and transporting seven passengers. During the detailed search, customs officials noted suspicious modifications to vehicles, which immediately raised suspicion of smuggling.
Following the search of customs dogs and vehicle scans, inspectors discovered a hidden bunker, where 14 transparent bags of 500 thousand euros were placed.
“Operation developed rapidly and efficiently thanks to the professionalism and experience of field teams. Any attempt to illegal cross-border transfer of cash will be severely sanctioned”, Nikolovski said.
Money and vehicle have been confiscated, while against the governor of the minibus, Albanian citizens with initials J.G., criminal rowing has been established. In the case, the Parliament of Kumanovo has already ruled.
In accordance with the legal procedures, sequentised camels have been handed over to the Agency for Secuested Property and then deposited in the National Bank.
