All mandated media attacks: Kurt says no word on World Press Freedom Day

On World Press Freedom Day, Prime Minister in resignation Albin Kurti has made no writing or statements to journalists, media or freedom of expression.

The last time Kurt spoke to the media was not to congratulate, support or thank for their work, but to be severely attacked by the Kosovo Assembly Speaker.

On April 2nd, during the debate on the Law on Independent Commission for Media, Kurti was launched into brutal attacks and grave accusations of “financing with money sack”, for secret interests” and for “dezinformation. "

Towards Kurti's attacks, AAK leader Ramush Haradinaj, who accused the head of the government that it is exactly what “happens mostly before"for, as he said, "used to target Albanians".

“He says the media is being funded with bags. Look what he's saying. Look at what he's saying, the media is being funded with bags. This spends most of your money feeding the Albanians insult...”

His statements were condemned by the Kosovo Journalists' Association, naming the prime minister's language as promotional rhetoric against media and journalists.

Kosovo in 2025 was ranked 99th in the RSF's World Press Freedom Index, while in 2026 it was established 84th. However, this improvement does not erase the fact that international organisations have identified a period of worsening media freedom in recent years.

A continuing problem remains the use of SLAPP indictments by businesses and politicians against investigative journalists.

The report describes an environment where journalists work but remain subject to political attacks and public discreditment.

“Although journalists successfully work to keep politicians responsible, they continue to be the target of political attacks”, It says in the report.

It also points out that independent media often face labels such as “work for the enemy”, popular in social networks.

The report also cites boycotts of private media prior to the government's 2025 elections.

Also, concern over pressure on public broadcasters has been raised RTK and political influence on its independence.
