How Long Can We Live?

Britain's National Statistics Office has published a new calculator showing the average life expectancy based on age and the gender of users.

The tool requires only the current age and gender, then calculated average life expectancy, as well as the possibility of a person living up to 68, 90, or 100 years of age.

The publication comes after new data showing that about one in four girls and one out of five British-born boys in 2049 are expected to live until at least 100 years of age.

According to the ONS, 19.1 percent of girls and 12 percent of boys born in 2024 are expected to reach the age of 100. These figures are projected to rise to 26.3 percent for girls, and 18.3 percent for boys born in 2049. By 2074, it is expected that 33.9 percent of girls and 25.4 percent of boys born that year will live 100 years or more.

The data has been modeled on previous trends of annual death records and combined with the estimates of an expert panel.

According to predictions, Britain's 2024 girls are expected to live on average to 90.2 years of age, and boys born in the same year as 86.9.

In 2049, average life expectancy is expected to grow to 92.4 for girls and 89.6 for boys. This represents a 2.2-year increase for girls and 2.6 years for boys compared to 2024.

New figures also show that the life expectancy gap between women and men in Britain is narrowing. In 1981, the difference was 4.4 years. In 2024 it fell to 3.3 years, while in 2029 it is projected to decline further to 2.9 years.

According to data, women 65 years of age in Britain in 2024 can expect to live an average of 22.7 more years, while men of the same age are about 20 years.

The ONS points out that the data is based on the so-called life expectancy of “hort”, which takes into account the future changes envisioned in mortality patterns for people born in the same year.

According to the institution, this is considered a more realistic measure because it estimates possible improvements in mortality during the life of a certain group of people.

The news comes shortly after researchers identified also food patterns that can help with the greatest life span. An analysis of more than 100 thousand people in Britain suggested that women could benefit more from the “Mediterranean Alternative Diata”, while men from “Dita for the Dybet Risk reduction”.

Both have common elements, such as the greatest consumption of healthy fruits, vegetables, and fats and the avoidance of processed meats.

However, there are also differences. For women, the study suggests greater importance of whole cereals, such as quinotes, brown rice, and oats. For men, it seems most important to drink coffee and avoid sugar drinks.

Researchers who published the findings in “magazine Science Advances” said they discovered an important link between healthy food patterns and longer life expectancy.

According to them, respecting sound food recommendations can help prolong life, allowing people space to adapt these patterns according to their preferences and traditions.
