Albania's prime minister, Edi Rama, has again attracted attention with his statements on Albania's foreign policy and position in international relations, talking about the role of small countries within global alliances.
During an interview, Rama commented on NATO's functioning and its member states report, stressing that small states do not have dominant decision-making role, but often benefit from major geopolitical developments.
“Yes, we are NATO members. But still, you know, it's not like we put a lot there”, Rama said, adding that member states often credit themselves with merit or responsibility depending on the outcome of the alliance's decisions.
He cited as examples of intervention in Kosovo and withdrawing from Afghanistan, stressing the different perception that is created in public opinion about the role of NATO and member states.
Speaking of diplomatic dynamics, Rama stressed that “the greats assume key responsibility”, while smaller countries often benefit politically from collective successes.
In the rest of the interview, the prime minister also stopped on economic issues and energy projects in the region, including the possibility that Albania will play a role in natural gas supply routes to Europe. However, Rama answered ironically, stressing the complexity of international consultations.
He also commented on relations with Albania's main allies, including the United States and Italy, praising close co-operation with Rome, especially in the area of migration and regional policies.
Rama's statements, coupled with his characteristic style of communication, have sparked discussions on public opinion on how Albania is positioned on the international stage.
