The assassination occurred on March 30, 1981, when the author, John Hinkley Jr., shot Reagan as he turned toward his limo after a speech inside the hotel.
Reagan survived but was severely injured by a bullet that crashed into the side of the presidential limo and struck him in the body, breaking a rib and drilling one of his lungs. He was rushed to George Washington University Hospital Hospital and released on April 11th.
Then White House spokesman James Brady was also injured in the same incident, as was a Secret Service agent and a Metropolitan Police officer.
Brady suffered brain damage during the attack and remained unable for the rest of his life. The health problems followed by his wounds accompanied him to the end and contributed to his death in 2014.
The following year, Hinkley was acquitted of mental disorder but was placed in a high - security department at St Elizabeth's Hospital until his release in 2016.
A memorial plaque still marks the location of the hotel's shooting site.
How did the armed attack happen at the White House journalists' dinner with Trump?
An armed attack occurred during the journalists' dinner in Washington, while American President Donald Trump was also in the hall.
An armed person tried to infiltrate the White House journalists' annual dinner facilities, shooting and wounding an effective one before being neutralised and arrested.
The event occurred when the ceremony had just begun. According to evidence, an unusual movement near the entrances of the hall was accompanied by shots and alarm calls, forcing those present to jump to the ground and seek protection under tables.
The president and his wife, Melanie Trump, on the main table, immediately left the agents of the Secret Service, who intervened quickly and co-ordinatedly. Within a few moments, the hall was filled with heavy armed security as guests were ordered to evacuate.
The surrounding area was isolated from the police while helicopters monitored the situation from the air. The event is organised each year by “White House Correspondents) Association” and collects important figures from American politics, media and public life.
The suspected author is Cole Allen, 31, who was banned by authorities. He had entered armed with intent to attack officials. He is considered a single worker, while full motives are still under investigation.
At that, the shooting injured a person by law force and is in danger of life.
About two hours after the incident, Trump reacted from the White House, naming the attack a dangerous act intended to crack down on democratic institutions. He stressed that the event will not affect his political decisions, including his stance on Iran.
