A senior White House official said Iran's possible new leadership has expressed readiness to negotiate with the United States after the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, but stressed that the US military operation will continue without interruption.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for the Associated Press, said President Donald Trump is ready “at the end of” to enter negotiations, but currently military operations continue normally. He did not mention concrete names of new Iranian leaders.
Earlier, Trump said new Iranian leaders are seeking talks and that he has agreed to communicate with them. In an interview for The Atlantic magazine quoted by Reuters, the American president said:
We wanted to talk and I agreed to talk to them. They should have done it earlier. They should have offered something very practical and easy to do. They waited long enough. ”
In a conversation with journalist Michael Scherer from his residence in Florida, Trump refused to reveal whether contact with the Iranian side will take place today or tomorrow, responding: “I cannot tell you this. ”
According to the White House statement, military operation called “Epic Rege” follows with intensity, while parallelly the possibility for a diplomatic channel between the parties remains open.
