Iran's assembly of experts has chosen Ali Khamene's son, Mojtaban, as the successor of the Supreme Leader, has reported Iranian opposition media “Iran International”.
Meanwhile, Israeli media confirm that the Assembly has voted the 56-year-old Mojtaba elections after in advance none of the 88 members were killed or wounded after Israel bombed the meeting site to elect Ali Khamene's successor in the town of Qoma.
The announcements, according to reports in Iran, will be formalised soon.
86-year-old Ali Khamenei was killed Saturday after the Israeli-American bombings.
Who is Mojataba Khamenei?
Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the former supreme leader and is considered a member of the ultra-conservative camp just like his father. Mojtaba has, among other things, expressed support for the crackdown on opponents of the regime within Iran and the adoption of a militant and aggressive policy on foreign enemies. He is a mid-level clergyman who teaches Shiite theology in the city of Com, the center of Iran's religious life, and although he has never held an official position in the regime, he is seen as a highly influential person in it and has cultivated close ties with the Revolutionary Guard. Analysts outside Iran have previously described it as a kind of “goalkeeper” in his father's district, and in 2019 US sanctions were imposed.
Until recently, Mojataba Khamenei was not seen as a particularly prominent candidate, mainly because his choice was seen as a transfer of power from father to son ʹ in a way that reminds of the monarchy Iran abandoned to the Islamic Revolution. Mojtaba was also not considered a senior cleric to be appointed to Iran's helm, but, as it has been said, his name has been mentioned more than once as a potential candidate. However, Israeli officials have stated in the past that, although he currently does not take a high position, the reason, they say, is that Iranians seem to be looking at “deliberately.
