Turkey's Defence Ministry has said the missile was destroyed by air systems deployed east of the Mediterranean, the AP reported.
Residents in the city of Adana have reported hearing strong explosions and sirens at Incirlik Air Base, which is used by American forces.
No casualties reported.
NATO has deployed an additional air defence system “Patrios” this week in the province of Malatia.
The Turkish ministry has stressed that the Incirlik base is a Turkish base and that the presence of foreign troops does not change its status.
The statement was a response to Iran's warnings to states that had US military bases in them. /Periscopi
