The daily Corriere della Sera reported that “several American bombers” were scheduled to land at the base in eastern Sicily before heading to the Middle East. He didn't say when they were planning to sit down.
The source, who was not authorized to speak to the media and refused to identify himself, also declined to specify how many planes were involved or when Rome refused to give permission.
Corriere della Sera added that permission was not granted after the US had not requested authorisation and Italy's military leadership was not consulted, as requested under treaties regulating the use of American military installations in the country.
The centre-left opposition parties have urged the government to block the use of American bases in Italy to avoid involvement in the conflict.
Prime Minister Giorgia Melon's right-wing government has said it will seek parliamentary authorization if such requests are made.
