A member of the armed forces “has died for France during the attack on the Erbeli region in Iraq”, Macron has written on the social X network.
It is also the first victim among French soldiers in the Middle East since the beginning of the new conflict that escalated late last month, after the United States and Israel carried out attacks on Iran.
Macron added that several other soldiers were injured in the incident. Earlier, the French Army had announced that six soldiers were injured Thursday in a fearful attack while conducting exercises.
Deputy Officer Arnaud Fryon of the 7th Alpine Hunters Battalion has died for France during an attack on the Erbali region in Iraq. His family, as well as his brothers in arms, I want him to express the deepest condolences and solidarity of the nation. Some of our soldiers are wounded. France stands by them and their families. This attack on our forces, which since 2015 have been engaged in the fight against I SIS is unacceptable. Their presence in Iraq takes place in a strict context of the fight against terrorism. The Iran war cannot justify such attacks”, Macron stated.
The soldiers were “engaged in training activities for the fight against terrorism with Iraqi partners”, said a member of the General Staff for AFP, adding that wounded troops were immediately sent to the nearest medical institution.
There were no injuries in that first attack, but Italy later announced the temporary withdrawal of its military personnel from the base.
Soldiers from several countries, including Italy and France, train members of Kurdish security forces in Iraqi Kurdistan as part of the international coalition against Washington-led jihadists.
After Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28th triggered Tehran's retaliatory counterattacks throughout the Middle East and beyond, Macro stressed that France's military position in the region is <x0ndropically defence”. /Periscope/
