Santapaola was kept in prison in Opera under the harsh 41 bis regime, following his arrest on May 18, 1993, at the end of a long period of escape. Because of his serious health condition, he had recently been transferred to the special medical department for prisoners under the high-security regime.
After the death of Milan's prosecution, he ordered an autopsy.
Born in Catania in 1938, Santapaola was considered one of the leading directors of the Sicilian mafia since the '70s.
He was a longtime leader of the Santapaola-Ercolano clan, with strong influence on the territory of the Etnea area.
Over the decades, he was involved in dozens of court processes on charges of being a mafia organization, murder, and drug trafficking.
His name relates to the bloody period of mob massacres that rocked Italy in the '80s and '90s, as well as the alliance with the Totão-led Corleones.
Santapaola was eventually sentenced to life in prison as a orderer of several massacres and played a role in the executive phase of the Capaci massacre on May 23, 1992, where Judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife and escort agents died. His arrest came a year later, ending a long run.
