American citizens should consider leaving Israel as long as commercial flights are available”, the State Department report said. Also advised to avoid travel to Israel, reports The Guardian.
The warning came after talks between the US and Iran on the future of Tehran's nuclear programme ended without a clear conclusion, with the suggestion that further discussions will be held next week. American President Donald Trump has deployed two groups of aircraftmen ready to attack Iran if he believes Tehran is not serious about ending its nuclear activities.
The State Department's warning was fulfilled with a message to US Embassy staff from Ambassador to Israel Mike Hookebe, who urged those who wanted to leave to do so “TODAY”
He contacted embassy staff with an email sent at 12:04 after midnight at local time, urging them to reserve flights wherever they could.
This “movement will likely result in high demand for aircraft locations today”, he wrote. “Focus on securing a country towards any destination from which you can then continue your trip to Washington, but the first priority is to leave the country as soon as possible. ”
The call to leave Israel came as Oman's foreign minister, Badr Albusaid, the principal mediator in the talks between the US and Iran, traveled to Washington in what seemed more and more like a last-time effort to convince Trump administration to refrain. He is expected to brief vice president JD Vance and argue that sufficient progress has been made in talks to justify caution.
The urgency of his visit, hours after talks between Iran and the US ended in Geneva on Thursday evening, suggests he believes he must act quickly to counter those who are arguing for a military intervention.
In a sign that major differences exist between the parties, the Iranian leadership urged the US to give up its strictest demands. US negotiators Steve Whitoff and Jared Kouchner did not issue a statement after the talks. /Periscopi
