The tram exits the tracks in Milan, a dead man and dozens of wounded

At least one person has been killed, and 39 others reportedly have been seriously injured after a tram came off track in the northern Italian town of Milan.

The crowded trailer was traveling between the Square of the Republic of the city and the Venice Gate around 4: 00 p.m. local time when it seemed to hit the side of a building.

Numerous ambulances are on the scene and there are reports of people trapped in ruins.

Passengers described that they heard a noise under the tram, after which it diverted, increased speed and hit a building.
