KMDLNj: The arrest of educator in disproportionate Pristina, immediate review of the move is required

Council for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms ( KMDLNj has reacted to the case occurring at the “Independence” school in Pristina, where a tape showing physical confrontation between an educator and a student has been published in the media.

In response, KMDLN estimates it's about a case that needs to be condemned, stressing that in recording “it is seen a moment where the educator physically confronts the student”, but also the “pest when the student hits the educator on foot, which should also be sanctioned by”.

“The rescindment of this recording caused great public response, after which the educator was arrested and sent to police maintenance for 48 hours”, the KMDLNj response reported.

However, this organisation raises concern over lack of information concerning the measures on students involved in the incident. “KMDLNj has no information as to whether any measures have been made, whether by police or school”, it is further stressed.

According to KMDLNj, the measure of arrest against the educator is excessive and unilateral. “The measure of arrest of the educator is considered unproportional and unilateral, which should immediately be reviewed”, says in response.

The organisation estimates that this case reflects the disturbing situation in Kosovo schools. This case clearly shows the situation in our schools, where student discipline has fallen to the ground and where educational personnel have no basic conditions for work, whether in terms of security or in that material”, it is said in response.

KMDLNj highlights that respect and co-operation between educators and students should be mutual, while the role of parents is deemed crucial. The numerous procedures in education prove that this co-operation is clearly lacking or is insufficient”, the organisation stresses.

KMDLNj requires greater institutional commitment to improve the situation.

We expect that municipal education directors will increase co-operation with August and take necessary measures to improve the situation”, said in response.

And so, KMDLN also appeals to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for increased engagement in preventing negative phenomena.

We expect the MPB to increase the commitment to prevent trade and drug use, retaining the means of violence and the fight against hooliganism, because, contrary, instead of dealing with prevention, we will deal with consequences”, the response concludes.
