“Today, as ten years ago, in the Kosovo Parliament, with 71 votes in favour, Hashim Thaci was elected president of Kosovo. Today, after ten years, Kosovo lacks more than ever!”
Ten years ago, on February 26, 2016, then president The PDK, Hashim Thaci, was elected president of Kosovo in the third round of voting in the Assembly, amid high political tensions. He secured 71 votes, as in the first two rounds he failed to get two-thirds of the deputies' votes.
The process was accompanied by fierce opposition from the opposition, which twice interrupted the session by throwing tear gas into the Assembly. Opposition MPs accused Thaci and then Prime Minister Isa Mustafa of harmful acts towards the country, citing agreements reached in dialogue with Serbia and the issue of demarcation with Montenegro. They also expressed doubts about possible agreements with the Serbian List in exchange for votes.
Meanwhile, there were clashes between protesters and police outside the Parliament building, where tear gas and water cannons were used to disperse the crowd. Several injured people, including members of police and protesters, reported the incidents.
Hashim Thaci officially assumed the office of president on April 7th 2016, following the solemn oath at the Kosovo Assembly. Prior to that, he had held top state positions, including that of Kosovo Prime Minister (20075014) and the first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2014502015).
On November 5, 2020, Thaci resigned from the post of president and travelled to The Hague after confirming the indictment against him for war crimes. At the recent conference as president, he declared he would not face international justice while remaining in office as president of Kosovo. /Periscope
