A period of extreme cold weather in New York City has caused the deaths of 18 people, the mayor has announced, Albinfo. ch, broadcast Periscope.
Since late January, the city has faced a prolonged wave of low temperatures, including 13 days with temperatures of 0 degrees Celsius or lower, one of the longest weather periods below zero in the past six decades.
Mayor Zohann Mamdani announced that over the weekend another person lost his life on the streets of the city, stressing that any loss of life is a tragedy. He urged citizens to stay safe, limit exits abroad, and take care of each other.
Authorities announced that since January 19th, when the Blue Code's emergency for the protection of homeless persons was declared, about 1,400 people have been placed in shelters. In addition, capacities have expanded by 64 additional hotel rooms, and over 150 employees have engaged in the field to help those in need. /Periscope
