A massive winter storm has cut off travel and cut power for thousands of people across the United States, with more than 13,000 flights canceled over the weekend, while the system threatens nearly 180 million people over half the US population with heavy snow and frozen rain.

The storm stretched from the southern rocky mountains to New England on Saturday, prompting President Donald Trump to approve emergency statements for at least dozens of states.

About 140,000 power cuts were reported on the path to the storm, including more than 58,000 in Louisiana and 50,000 in Texas, according to poweroutage.us.

Meteorologists had warned that the severity of the storm could rival him of a hurricane, especially in areas facing considerable ice accumulate.

Friday, W's leading meteorologist The CNC, Brad Panovich, issued a stern warning to residents in Carolina.

This is not a fun snowy day. This is a harmful ice case”, Panovich wrote on X.

“We have been fortunate for a long time, but data shows a situation that requires respect and preparation”, he added.

National Weather Service (NWS) warned that snow and ice would be highly, very slowly, and would not quickly disappear”, hampering recovery efforts.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had prepositioned goods, staff and rescue teams in many countries.

We just want everyone to be smart if possible, Noem said.

In Shelby County, Texas, near the Louisiana border, the ice weighed heavily on pines and caused branches to break down, bringing down power lines.

About a third of the county's 16,000 electricity customers lost power Saturday. In DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, more than half of all electricity customers were without power, with trees “full of ice”, according to local officials./Periscopi/
