Thaci case and others, Tromp talks about high-level evidence and decision scenarios

The Hague's Tribunal researcher for the former Yugoslavia, Nevenka Tromp, estimates that the testimony of high-ranking witnesses called from defence in the process to Hashim Thaci and others in the Specialised Chambers in The Hague has had a clear goal: to prove the absence of the criminal intention of the accused, Kosovo Press reports.

According to Tromp, selecting the names of diplomatic and military weights was no coincidence, but part of a well-calculated defence strategy to strike the key element of the indictment “s rea” - the criminal goal.

The first Witness was James Ruby, former US State Secretary of State. Following him has witnessed the Albanian delegation's former legal adviser in Rambouilles, Paul Williams. The specialised Chambers in The Hague also witnessed the former political adviser to NATO's top commander, Wesley Clark, John Steaart Duncan. Later, James Peter Covey, who was deputy UN representative in Kosovo Bernard Kouchner. In defense of Thaci, the former American diplomat also testified. Christopher Hill and Michael Durke in the quality of Wesley Clark's former political adviser.

During the past year in Pristina, The Hague, Tirana, Strasbourg and Skopje, thousands of Albanians protested the “Directorate for Liberations”. Another protest will be organised on February 17th in defence of former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders (UÇK). By motto “Justice, non-political” will be protested in “Square Skenderbeu” in Pristina on the 18th anniversary of Kosovo's declaration of Independence, Kosovo Preress reports.

This protest this time is organised by the organisation “Freedom has a name”, which expects mass participation.

Former Kosovo Liberation Army superiors Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselin, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are in custody in The Hague from November 2020. The trial against them has begun on April 3, 2023, nearly three years after confirming the indictment since former KLA leaders are held at The Hague detention centre.

The Specialised Prosecutor's Office, which charges former KLA leaders with responsibility for alleged war crimes, had brought about 125 witnesses, while being based on over 100 written evidence. / KP/
