The Federal Supreme Court in Brazil has refused to release former football player Robinho, deciding that he will continue to remain in custody.
The decision was made at a virtual session held Friday (29 August), where 10 out of 11 judges voted against his release.
Robinho, 40, has been in prison since March 2024, after Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) accepted implementation in Brazil of the Italian court's decision, which sentenced the former striker to nine years in prison for participating in the rape of an Albanian woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013.
His lawyers appealed the verdict, arguing that the sentence could not be executed without draining all appeals opportunities.
However, the Federal Supreme Court dropped that claim, except for Judge Gilmar Mendes, who cast his only vote for provisional release, follows Tch, the Periscope broadcasts.
The decision eventually leaves Robinho behind bars, while former Real Madrid player and Milan will have to serve the sentence in a Brazilian prison.
