The Dutchman joined the Bundesligla team in May as substitute for Xabi Alonso, who moved to Real Madrid, hoping to rebuild his reputation after a difficult period in Manchester United. But he took the lead only three matches with the first team, a 4-0 victory in DFB-Pocal over Grosaspach and Bundesliga's confrontations against Hoffmanheim and Werder Bremen.
Hoffenheim's match ended with a loss 2-1, while Leverkusen equalled 3-3 in Bremen on Saturday, but lost a 3-1 advantage against the ten rival players in the final half of the match.
It has been a difficult summer for Leverkusen, with several members of the team winning the Bundesliga title under Alonso's direction in the 2023/24 season leaving the club. Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Jaka have left the club, with replacements such as Malik Tillman, Jarell Qwansah and Loic Bade coming.
