The game was interrupted for about a minute, while the players withdrew to a safe area and hid after hearing shots outside the complex. At that moment, China was leading 3-2. Marco Antonio Lemos, president of Bahia's Federation of Water Sports, said: “The event stopped for about a minute. Our team saw the police deal with the” situation.
Police disclosed that the shooting was the result of a clash with an alleged thief outside the sports facility, who was trying to escape. Fans were informed of the incident only after the match resumed.
