A man has been arrested after reports by Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo, for racist calls during Premier League's opening match against Liverpool in Anfield.
Friday's match was briefly interrupted in the 29th minute, when Semenyo announced the referee for the incident. Merseyside police identified a 47-year-old man from Liverpool and removed him from the stadium. He was arrested Saturday under suspicion of violating public order with racial motive and sent to custody for investigation.
The match resumed four minutes later, and Semenyo scored two goals for Bournemouth, who lost 4-2 to Liverpool.
Bournemouth's captain, Adam Smith, told Sky Sports: “Shows how strong he is as the man who reported the incident to the referee and continued the game. Liverpool players were very supportive of him and the entire team. ”
Liverpool coach Arne Slot commented that the “incident darkened a bit of the match's atmosphere, because our fans were amazing, especially with their prayers for Diogon”.
Premier League announced it will also conduct an investigation into the event. Football Association added: “incidents of this type have no place in our game. We will co-operate closely with respective referees, clubs and authorities to uncover the facts and take appropriate measures. ”
The organisation against discrimination Kick Itout said it stands solid with Semenyon and praises his courage: “Anthony Taylor and his arbitrator team also deserves praise for quick and decisive actions. ”/Periscopi/
