Rodriguez, 37, faced 21-year-old boxer Philip Vela in Phoenix, Arizona, in a duel called “Brawl in the Barrio”. He was not the favourite in this confrontation, while Vela, invincible, won the match with unanimous decision after six rounds.
After the match, Rodriguez had returned to the hotel and planned to go out for dinner. But on Sunday morning, the hotel staff found him lifeless in his room, not showing up for the transport he was taking to the airport. The official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, while police are investigating whether there is any connection to the strikes taken during the match.
His wife said:
“called me as soon as the match is over. He made me video calls from the hotel. He said he was going out for dinner and he was coming back, because at 3:30 in the morning, he'd be taken to the airport. That was the last time we spoke. I don't know what happened. I'm confused. We have to wait for the official report. ”
Vela, meanwhile, reacted with a touching message on social media:
I'm deeply sad. Thanks for sharing the ring for six rounds. My prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, champ. ”/Periscopi/
