The brothers traveled by car to the Spanish city of Santander to catch the ferry to England, since Jotham had been advised not to travel by plane after surgery in the lungs.
The mortore ceremony, which began with prayer “Our Father”, took place at the Parrokial Church of Gondomari and was led by the Bishop of Portos, Dom Manuel Linda.
He held a touching fan, especially addressing Jota Dean's three children, Ma falda and Duarta, and their grieving mother, Rute Cardoso.
It's hard to see an adult crying, but even harder to see a child. We are with you, but Jesus is with you,” The Bishop said.
Rute, Jota's wife, all dressed in white and carrying a cream rose, was one of the most touched figures during the ceremony.
She put her hand on her husband's coffin as those present were overwhelmed by deep emotions in complete silence.
Only family and close friends were allowed within the church, while for thousands of participants outside, the service was broadcast directly.
Large names of Portuguese and international football attended the funeral. Captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliot and coach Arne Slot were present from Liverpool. Van Dijk wore a crown of fanella's shape with a number 20 in Jota's honor while Robertson wore a red fan with a number 30 for André Silva.
Also, former Liverpool players were present: Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho and Theago Alcâtara. Reuben Dias and Bernardo Silva from Manchester City, as well as Reuben Neves, who traveled by private plane from the United States after the Al-Hilal World Cup match for Club, held his best friend's coffin. Nelson Semedo, former team of Wolfves, was present.
Despite reports of sightings in the Mediterranean, Cristiano Ronaldo was not present at the funeral, which was confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation. However, he expressed his condolences through a touching post on social networks:
“It makes no sense. We were just together in the National, you were just married. My condolences to your family, your wife and children. Diogo and André, we will miss you so much. ”
goalkeeper Aliceson Becker was unable to participate because of his commitments with the Brazilian national, but posted a touching boom in the Instagram, writing:
Once again, an ocean separates me from a farewell. But I know I'm represented worthy of my associates. I will remember Diogon as a great friend, father, and husband. ”
After about an hour - long Mass, coffins were escorted to the cemetery near the church, surrounded by olive trees, where they were slaughtered forever. The sounds of the “Ave Mary” were heard in the background, while those present were weeping and embracing each other during the procession.
The great crowd outside the church greeted them with applause, a silent honor for the life and memory of the two brothers.
A memorial mass (between 7th and July) will be held on Wednesday, July 9, at 9: 00 p.m., at the same church, where family members will gather to share memories and pray for Diogon and André.
Liverpool has announced that he will pay off all of Jotham's remaining contract about two more years in his honor and support his family. The club has also eventually attracted the fanella with the number 20.
The tragic death of Diogo Jota and André Silva has shaken not only the Portuguese community but also the entire football world. Messages of comfort, tears, and prayers testify to the deep respect both enjoyed as sportsmen and as people. They will always be remembered with love and pride.
