Kevin De Bruyne's surprise transfer to Naples has found to be partly motivated by the desire to prove Manchester City wrong to let him go.
The 33-year-old midfielder joined Naples as free transfer after a decade of unblemished service in Etihad, where there was a key player in the City's dominant era.
De Bruyne chose Naples to show City that he could still compete at the highest level despite their doubts about his ability to continue performing at the highest level, reports The Athletic newspaper.
The new De Bruyne Club can face City in next season's Champions League, adding more spices to the transfer, reporton Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.
De Bruyne, a former Liverpool tattoo, grew up idolizing Michael Owen and even discovered in the past that he would want to play for Reds one day.
However, it is impossible that a transfer to Anfield had been possible, given the strong rivalry between the two clubs.
The news comes as Liverpool has strengthened the midfield ranks with the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported 120m pounds, potentially up to 140m euros.
With De Bruynne wearing Naples's lantern, the stage is set for an interesting chapter in his career. /Periscope/
